Money worries can also make it harder for employees to afford healthcare, eat nutritious foods, and maintain healthy habits. Employers can help by including financial education, budgeting resources, debt management tools, and confidential support in their employee wellness programs. These resources help employees build financial confidence while supporting their overall health and well-being.

Financial stress does not stay neatly inside a bank account. It can keep employees up at night, distract them during their commute, make it hard to focus in meetings, and affect choices about groceries or doctor visits.

It shows up as an employee looking at a medical bill and wondering if there is enough money for groceries, childcare, rent, and yesterday’s car repair. Even at their desk the next day, their mind is still on those bills. This can affect everything from sleep to office productivity. That is why the connection between financial stress and employee health deserves a place in the broader workplace wellness conversation.

Financial wellness is more than just a retirement benefit or a budgeting tool. Financial stability is now seen as a key part of overall well-being, and research links financial strain to physical, mental, and functional health.

When employers understand this connection, they can design wellness programs that fit real-life needs.

RELATED: Financial Wellness Programs In The Workplace: A Comprehensive Guide

What Does The Research Say?

Financial stress affects more than just how employees feel about money. Research links financial strain to worse physical and mental health, unhealthy habits, delayed medical care, and heart problems. A 2025 review of 199 U.S. studies found that financial strain was associated with poorer mental, physical, biological, and functional health across many groups.

Financial pressure also remains common. The Federal Reserve reported in 2026 that only 63% of U.S. adults could cover a $400 emergency expense entirely with cash or its equivalent, while 26% had skipped medical expenses due to cost in the previous year.

These pressures can enter the workplace. PwC’s 2026 Employee Financial Wellness Survey found that 59% of surveyed employees were currently stressed about their finances, and that employees also reported effects on mental health, sleep, and productivity.

Employers should not expect a wellness program to fix every employee’s financial problem. That is not possible. Instead, employers can view financial wellness as part of overall well-being and offer practical resources to help employees make healthy choices.

Why Is Financial Stress a Health Issue, Not Just a Money Issue?

Financial stress can have many causes. It might be high housing costs, medical bills, credit card debt, childcare expenses, student loans, an unexpected repair, supporting aging parents, or simply watching everyday expenses climb faster than a household budget can keep up with.

Financial stress is not limited to people with very low incomes. Someone can earn a good salary and still have little emergency savings, significant debt, high caregiving costs, or financial obligations that create considerable pressure.

The Federal Reserve’s latest household data illustrates the vulnerability that remains beneath the surface. In its 2025 household survey, released in 2026, 73% of adults said they were doing okay or living comfortably financially. Yet just 63% said they could cover a $400 emergency expense with cash or its equivalent.

Those two numbers tell an important story. Financial wellness is not binary. Someone can appear financially stable while still living with very little margin for error. A broken transmission, an emergency dental procedure, a rent increase, or an unexpected trip to care for a family member can quickly turn manageable finances into a significant source of stress.

How Financial Stress Can Affect Physical Health?

The human stress response is useful when danger is temporary. Your heart rate increases. Stress hormones are released. Your body becomes more alert and ready to respond.

But financial worries are rarely resolved in 20 minutes. Debt does not disappear after the adrenaline wears off. Rent is due again next month. Medical bills keep arriving. Grocery prices still matter. That means financial stress can become chronic rather than temporary.

According to the CDC’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), chronic stress can affect multiple systems throughout the body, including the cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, respiratory, reproductive, and musculoskeletal systems. These widespread physiological effects demonstrate why stress management is an important component of comprehensive employee wellness programs.

Financial strain specifically has also been studied in relation to health. A systematic review published in 2025 examined 199 U.S. studies and found that financial strain was consistently associated with poorer physical health and greater chronic disease burden, as well as poorer mental and functional health and less healthy behaviors. Importantly, many of these associations remained even after researchers accounted for other socioeconomic factors.

Another systematic review and meta-analysis examining cardiovascular outcomes found an association between financial stress and major cardiac outcomes. The researchers also emphasized limitations in the existing evidence, including differences in how studies define and measure financial stress.

That distinction matters. Research supports a meaningful association between financial strain and poorer health. It does not mean every financially stressed employee will develop a health condition—or that financial stress alone caused an individual employee’s illness.

Health is more complicated than that. But financial stability is one of the conditions that can influence whether healthy choices are realistic and sustainable.

How Can Financial Pressures Change Everyday Health Decisions?

The relationship between money and health is not only biological. It is practical. Consider what happens when someone has $150 left before payday.

They may postpone filling a prescription.

Skip the dentist.

Choose less expensive food rather than the food they would prefer nutritionally.

Cancel a fitness membership.

Avoid taking unpaid time away from work for a medical appointment.

Or tell themselves that a persistent symptom can wait another month.

In the Federal Reserve’s 2025 household survey, 26% of adults reported skipping medical care due to cost in the previous year.

Healthy People 2030 similarly identifies economic stability as one of the five major social determinants of health. The federal initiative notes that financial conditions can influence people’s ability to afford necessities including healthy food, health care, housing, and education.

That changes the employee wellness conversation. Sometimes the barrier to a healthy behavior is not motivation. It is capacity. An employee may understand perfectly well that they should schedule preventive care, eat nutritious food, get eight hours of sleep, or manage stress. Their financial circumstances may simply make those behaviors harder to prioritize. Effective wellness strategies recognize the difference.

Does Financial Stress Follow Employees to Work?

There is another reason employers should pay attention: financial worries do not automatically disappear at 8:00 a.m. An employee may be physically present while part of their attention is occupied with a late payment, an unexpected expense, an insurance claim, or a childcare bill.

PwC’s 2026 Employee Financial Wellness Survey, conducted among nearly 3,500 U.S. employees, found that 59% of respondents reported being currently stressed about their finances. Nearly half—49%—said their compensation was not keeping pace with costs. More than half had less than $5,000 in emergency savings, while 30% had less than $1,000.

The effects can also reach workplace performance. Among Gen Z respondents in the same survey,71% reported reduced productivity due to financial stress, while 85% said it affected their mental health. This does not mean every distracted employee has a financial problem, nor does it mean every financial wellness initiative automatically improves productivity.

It does suggest something more practical: Employee financial health and organizational performance are not completely separate conversations. When people have fewer urgent problems competing for their attention, they have more capacity to focus on the work in front of them.

Why Does Financial Wellness Belong in a Comprehensive Employee Wellness Program?

For years, workplace wellness was often pictured through a fairly narrow lens: steps, exercise, nutrition, biometric screenings, and occasionally a stress-management activity. Those things still matter. But a person does not experience health in separate folders.

Financial wellness can affect stress. Stress can affect sleep. Poor sleep can make exercise harder. Healthcare costs can influence whether someone seeks treatment. A health problem can then create additional financial pressure.

It is less like a row of separate boxes and more like a set of gears. Turn one, and several others can move with it. That is one reason employer wellness strategies have become more comprehensive.

The Business Group on Health’s 2025 Employer Well-being Strategy Survey, representing 131 employers and 11.2 million employees worldwide, found that 92% of surveyed employers included financial health in their 2025 well-being strategy, with all respondents projecting its inclusion in 2026.

Financial wellness has moved toward the center of the workplace well-being conversation because employers increasingly recognize that employees bring their whole lives to work.

RELATED: 35 Employee Financial Wellness Challenge Ideas & Tips

What Employers Can Do About Financial Stress?

Employers cannot eliminate inflation, erase an employee’s debt, or control housing costs. And they should not try to become employees’ financial planners. They can, however, create an environment that helps employees build knowledge, access useful resources, and develop healthier financial behaviors.

1. Start With Financial Wellness Education People Can Actually Use

A generic annual presentation about retirement planning may be valuable, but it will not necessarily help the employee worried about making it to payday. Financial education should address real-life needs across different life stages, such as:

Building an emergency fund

Creating a workable household budget

Understanding credit

Managing debt

Preparing for healthcare expenses

Using HSAs and FSAs

Understanding workplace benefits

Planning for major life expenses

Building retirement savings

The best topic is often the one employees need right now.

Bank of America’s 2025 Workplace Benefits research found the percentage of workers seeking employer guidance on near-term needs—including emergency savings, debt reduction, and overall financial wellness had doubled from 13% in 2023 to 26% in 2025.

2. Make Financial Wellness Practical, Not Judgmental

Money is personal. Employees may feel embarrassed about debt or anxious about asking basic financial questions. A program that feels like a lecture can unintentionally make that worse.

Instead, give employees private, low-pressure ways to participate. Short educational content, self-directed tools, optional challenges, webinars, coaching resources, and confidential financial education can give people different entry points.

Think less “Here is what you have been doing wrong.”

Think more “Here is one useful thing you can do next.”

That small difference matters.

3. Connect Financial Wellness to Existing Benefits

Organizations may already offer resources that employees do not fully understand or use. Financial wellness education can help employees make better use of benefits such as:

Retirement plans and employer matching

Health savings accounts

Flexible spending accounts

Employee assistance programs

Tuition assistance

Student loan benefits

Childcare or caregiver resources

Mental health benefits

Preventive healthcare coverage

A benefit employees do not understand can easily become a benefit they never use. Financial wellness helps translate a benefits package from a collection of acronyms into tools employees can apply to everyday life.

4. Make Small Financial Behaviors Easier to Practice

Information alone rarely changes behavior. Most people already know that saving money is a good idea, just as they know that vegetables are healthy and that movement matters. The challenge is turning knowledge into action.

That is where behavior-change principles become useful. An employee might begin by tracking spending for one week, reviewing one benefit, setting one savings goal, automating a small transfer, or learning one new financial concept. Small actions create momentum.

WellSteps, for example, incorporates financial wellness as one of its six pillars of wellness and offers financial wellness activities alongside physical, mental and emotional, nutritional, social, and occupational wellness resources.

The goal is not to turn every employee into a financial expert. It is to make the next healthy decision easier.

5. Measure What Employees Actually Need

A workforce nearing retirement may need different resources than one dominated by employees in their twenties and thirties. Healthcare employees may have different pressures than teachers, manufacturing workers, municipal employees, or financial professionals.

So ask. Use employee surveys, wellness assessments, benefit utilization data, participation patterns, and program feedback to identify what matters most.

Then adjust. A strong wellness strategy should operate more like a GPS than a printed road map: use current information, understand where people are, and help determine the most useful next step.

Is Financial Wellness Part of Whole-Person Wellness?

Yes! However, there is an important boundary employers should maintain. A workplace wellness program cannot fix every financial challenge employees face. But ignoring financial stress does not make its health effects or its workplace effects disappear. The evidence increasingly supports a broader view of employee health.

Economic stability influences access to healthcare and other conditions that support health. Financial strain is associated with physical and mental health outcomes. Employees themselves report that financial worries affect their sleep, mental health, attention, and productivity. That makes financial wellness more than an optional financial literacy benefit. It makes it part of the larger ecosystem of employee well-being.

At WellSteps, we believe sustainable wellness happens when organizations recognize how the different parts of life connect. Physical health matters. Mental health matters. Emotional health matters. Nutrition, social connection, occupational well-being, and financial wellness matter too. The objective is not perfection in every category. It is progress.

One better decision. One useful resource. One healthier habit. One less source of uncertainty. Over time, those small steps can help employees build something bigger: greater confidence in their ability to manage both their health and their lives. And that is a definition of employee wellness worth working toward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does financial stress affect employee health?
Research has associated financial strain with poorer physical, mental, biological, and functional health outcomes. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau defines financial well-being, particularly financial security, as “the freedom to make choices both now and in the future.”

Can financial stress affect employee productivity?
Yes, financial concerns can compete for employees’ attention and are associated with self-reported effects on productivity. PwC’s 2026 Employee Financial Wellness Survey found widespread financial stress among employees and reported particularly strong productivity effects among financially stressed younger workers. Employers should interpret these survey findings as evidence of an important relationship rather than assuming financial stress is the sole cause of productivity problems.

What can employers include in a financial wellness program?
Employers can provide education and resources related to budgeting, emergency savings, debt management, credit, healthcare expenses, workplace benefits, retirement planning, and other financial decisions.
